On this channel we often look at maritime disasters like Titanic, Lusitania or the Empress of Ireland. It can get a bit taxing on the soul - so today I thought you'd lighten the mood with some funny stories from the great days of the ocean liners. From the SS Great Eastern's unintended design faults to epic beer-rescuing missions, pranks, frauds and a famous ship with a mind of its own! Here are a few of my favourite funny maritime stories.
Oceanliner Designs explores the design, construction, engineering and operation of history’s greatest vessels- from Titanic to Queen Mary and from the Empress of Ireland to the Lusitania. Join maritime researcher and illustrator Michael Brady as he tells the stories behind some of history's most famous ocean liners and machines!

Titanic Conspiracy: The Full Truth | Part Two
Переглядів 111 тис.День тому
In the 1990s a new and explosive theory emerged, championed by an authour and enthusiast from England. Robin Gardiner proposed that Titanic never really sank at all; that in April 1912 it was actually the ship's sister, Olympic, that sank as part of a plot to cash in on insurance for the beleaguered owner of the liners, the White Star Line. Flash forward to today and the theory has picked up sp...
What Happened to Titanic's Survivors After the Sinking?
Переглядів 620 тис.14 днів тому
Thursday April 18th, 1912: across the globe telegraphs are rattling non-stop and newspapers run with dramatic headlines. Incredibly it seems that the White Star Line’s newest and finest liner has sunk with an enormous loss of life. As Carpathia approached New York the world held its breath - what had happened that chilling, clear night on the North Atlantic? Who were among the living and the de...
How They Rescued Titanic's Passengers: Carpathia's Wild Dash
Переглядів 188 тис.14 днів тому
In the early hours of April 15th, 1912 the RMS Carpathia's lone wireless operator Harold Cottam picked up his headset for one last listen before turning in for bed. What he heard shocked him to his core; RMS Titanic, the newest liner of the White Star Line, was sinking fast. Carpathia's story as a hero rescue ship is a fascinating one, and in this episode we explore how the night of the disaste...
Titanic Before Disaster

The story of Titanic is perhaps most well-known for its ending - the image of the tragic loss of the liner, taking with it nearly 1500 souls into the freezing depths of the North Atlantic, has been seared into our collective memory for over 100 years. Tragedy is what most people think of when they hear the name “Titanic.” But this is, of course, only part of the story. The White Star Line vesse...

We're so used to the propaganda (Hollywood) that we were the "good guys" that we often forget the reality: many WWII atrocities were committed by the Allies in the name of war (let's not forget Hiroshima and Nagasaki). But since history is written by the winners, we will only ever hear about how "bad" the Nazis were.

Kommuna is an slightly enlarged copy of German salvage ship Vulkan, built 5 years before, German yard was contracted to design Kommuna (named Volkhov). Just information to make clear what very little skills Russians have in open ocean.

My dad worked as for an environmental consulting company for years, and one of the big contracts they had was a long term study on the content of Tributyl-tin (TBT) in the water around ports all around the US. Tributyl-tin was an anti fouling paint (or a component of it, probably). The company would take samples from the Puget Sound, where we lived, and my dad would go to Rhode Island several times a year to collect samples from the water there. Some people were sent to Galveston TX to sample that water as well. I think TBT is banned nowdays.

Man, our friend Mike Brady NEVER EVER fails to make me cry when talking about ships sailing to the rescue of their fellows (or at least the crews of such). Humans caring for each other and ships being a worthy vessel (excuse the pun) to channel their heroism! Brilliant as always!

Carpathia was very much giving "my friend called for help in the middle of the night so I'm in pajamas and unmatched shoes with my shirt on backwards and I broke 14 traffic laws to get here but I'M HERE BABE" vibes and the captain, crew, and the ship herself all deserve goddamn sainthoods for that hustle.

My opinon is.This video accurate but some parts. 1:The public knew about the small arms ammunition it was told by cunard 2: you didnt mention the secret cargo was some ammunition that was not small arms 3:the germans knew and put out a warning how the ship could be in danger of being attacked. 4: turner had to slow down due fog If anyone wants to know about Lusitania in a more detailed aspect you can check out ua-cam.com/video/mG8ziHYU7j0/v-deo.htmlsi=AoWfnJr6X9DJwAOw the full story of carpathia by historic travels.

Anyone genuinely criticising the designers of Titanic for breaking in two under that much stress probably miss the point. Tongue in cheek, the barber's shop wasn't designed to serve as a fulcrum for the bow and the stern and they permitted themselves the luxury of assuming it wouldn't have to. Where they did err was in their assumption that five compartments wouldn't flood, put measures in place to prevent relatively minor damage from causing it (additional skins), or implement backup watertight doors to completely seal any and all compartments. Subsequent ship designs show the key learnings were understood and implemented; look at how much damage the Bismarck took before finally sinking. Love these videos. I found your channel two days ago and your videos have been riveting (sorry).

From my extremely removed and un-knowledgable perspective, the biggest problem I see here is the decision to continue allowing passenger travel through an active war zone. Yes, so many other things went wrong, but that one seems like the most blatantly obvious "what in god's name were you thinking?" issue.

For some odd reason, Lightoller's story intrigues me more so than any other story I can think of. I know for a fact that he isn't one to beat around the bush about anything. In reference to someone else's comment, Lightoller had already been through hell and back many times over. Most people would expect heroes to have a flawless moral character. But Lightoller isn't like that and he's still a hero. I hate how people just ignore his many acts of heroism and only look at his actions during the Titanic sinking. There's more to him than just that. He's actually a bit of a jokester. For example, his boat, the Sundowner (which still exists and is on display), was stalked by a U-boat in German waters and what did Lightoller do to get out of being sunk? He pretended he was drunk and wasn't paying attention. Although he did inadvertently avenge the Lusitania and the Britannic all in one go.
